This is a 5 day trip to The Lofoten Islands, these gritty rocks are strung out across 9 principle islands connected by impressive bridges that span the icy and turbulent waters of the Norwegian Sea, far above the Arctic Circle. This wilderness of connected islands is awe inspiring with majestic mountains, deep fjords, seabird colonies, surf-swept beaches and small fishing communities.
Although within the Arctic circle the climate is not as cold as you would expect, due to the warming of the Gulf Stream, making it warmer than the inland plateaus and mountain of Norway, but still the snow blankets the mountains, valleys and the beaches of these Arctic Islands.
We will travel to several locations. from the fishing villages at the western tip of the Isles and across in every direction across the archipelago from our central bases. You will be accompanied by a photographic guide to show you the location and help you with achieving the best shots possible. There will be some early starts as we will up and out for sunrise and then be out for the rest of the day to capture the sunset before returning to our base. We will then head back out during the evening to search for the Northern Lights (dependet on the weather).
Our accommodation are Norwegian fishing huts or “Rorbiers” in a central location overlooking the sea, meaning we can get to many photogenic locations without too much fuss and travel.
Friday 20th March: Fly from UK & arrive Harstad, & travel west to our first night's accommodation.
Saturday 21st March: We will leave our fishing hut accommodation and head towards the Western End of The Lofoten to the island of A, en route at sunrise we we will explore this island landscape and fishing communities, at sunset we will visit some great locations for a shoot. In the evening we will head out to search for the Northern Lights if the conditions are favourable.
Sunday 22nd March: We will head back out into the rugged landscape for sunrise and spend the day exploring the rugged coastline and the iconic photogenic locations. We will stay out or head out later in the evening we will again head out seeking The Northern Lights
Monday 23rd March: This morning we will travel around the coast of the island, starting at sunrise, we will travel to discover the bays and beaches and capture images of the Arctic Surf of the chilling Norwegian Sea. In the evening we will again head out hunting for The Northern Lights
Tuesday 24th March: We spend the day travelling around stunning glacial terrain and visit some of Norway’s oldest fishing villages, with their idyllic wooden fisherman’s rorbiers and imposing fishing buildings. In the evening we will again drive out to capture The Northern Lights.
Wednesday 25th March: We will again head out at sunrise for a morning shoot and then make our way back to Harstad Airport, we will also visit the Viking Long House Museum.
The weather in Northern Norway is changeable so the itinery may change, but we will visit the iconic photographic locations en route to and around The Lofoten Islands, if the nights skies allow we will also head out to capture the Northern Lights.
The itinerary in flexible, our priority is the photography and as our group is small we can adapt our plans during the strip. Although we will also look to aim the Viking and the War Museum at Narvik if time permits.
A full kit list will be provided.
